Teeth Exams and Cleanings

We know that sometimes the dentist’s office is an intimidating place to patients of all ages, but the team at Rocky Point Dental is working hard to change your perception of dental services and welcome you on a regular basis. For anyone nervous about visiting our office, or someone who hasn’t had a dental exam in a while, we’ll help you understand what to expect in advance and learn why regular checkups are so important to your overall health. When you visit us for your exam, you’ll feel more relaxed and confident about the process and can be proud to take a positive step toward protecting your smile and your health.

When to schedule a dental exam and teeth cleaning

Dental professionals in our office and beyond recommend that children and adults schedule 1 or 2 dental exams per year, or possibly more if your dentist specifically recommends it based on your health needs. Children as young as 1 may visit the dentist for gentle teeth cleaning once their baby teeth begin to appear. The dentist can answer any of your pediatric teeth care questions you have about making sure your child’s teeth remain healthy as they grow.

What to expect during your dental exam

Whether it’s your first dental exam or your fiftieth, Rocky Point Dental follows the same basic steps in an exam and teeth cleaning visit before moving on to any specialized care. If you’re a new patient in our office, we’ll help you fill out basic health information when you arrive. Next, one of our dental hygienists will help you get comfortable in a reclining chair, explaining each step as your exam progresses. Often, this starts with digital X-rays using a very low, safe level of radiation to take a “snapshot” of your teeth and jawbone. The dentist will review these images with you to check for proper spacing, alignment, and bone density on your upper and lower jaw.

After X-rays, the hygienist will gently remove any plaque build-up that happens naturally as we eat and drink. Brushing, flossing, regular teeth cleanings, and preventative care will keep the plaque levels to a minimum so that bacteria won’t develop into more serious gingivitis or periodontal (gum) disease.

Your teeth cleaning may also involve a fluoride treatment with an electric brush to scrub tooth enamel for a brighter smile. Finally, our dentist will inspect your teeth and X-rays. As you discuss the results together, you’ll be able to plan your next exam or consider further treatment options for any cosmetic or restorative procedures.

The preventative value of regular dental exams

Adults who are nervous about going to the dentist usually feel uncomfortable at the thought of drills, extracting teeth, and other invasive procedures. Fortunately, a regular dental exam and teeth cleaning is not painful and doesn’t use any of those invasive tools. Better still, the patients who visit a dentist regularly will minimize the future need for any further procedures, making their visits more straightforward and comfortable.
